50-Year-Old Bookkeeper Ordered to Pay Back $300,000 to School District

Recently, a 50-year-old bookkeeper was put under investigative watch when the district business office discovered discrepancies in her record keeping books for October. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office found significant evidence that the bookkeeper, Gina Neri, was utilizing checks meant for the school district for personal use. After looking deeper into Neri’s records, investigators realized she had been conducting this unconscionable theft dating all the way back to 2011. In total, Neri likely stole over $190,0000. After discovering this fact, prosecutors decided to press charges. Neri was apprehended and taken into police custody in May. At the time, she was charged with filing a fraudulent tax return, failing to file a tax return and a failure to pay. Neri has since decided to plead guilty to third degree theft by deception and a failure to file a tax return. As part of her plea deal, she will be required to pay back over $300,000.
