The reality of marriage is that uncertainty is something you need to prepare for. Divorces are more common than you may realize, and they can happen at any point in a relationship. Knowing these statistics can help you when the unexpected happens. A study by Pew Research Center published in 2025 highlights some data on the timing of divorces in the United States.

How common is divorce?

One important statistic is that one-third of Americans who marry had their first marriage end in divorce. While this does not mean exactly 33% of all marriages fail, it is still a significant number. This number also includes married couples who may divorce in the future.

Divorce affects millions of people just like you. Among people who married in the 1970s and 80s, nearly half experienced divorce.

When does divorce happen?

While divorces can happen at any time, there are clear trends in the timing of divorces. About four in ten divorces occur within the first decade of marriage. Specifically, about 16% of divorces happen within the first five years, while 24% occur between the fifth and ninth year. Currently, the median length of a marriage that ends in divorce is around 12 years.

However, longevity does not guarantee immunity from divorce. Surprisingly, 22% of divorces occur after 25 years or more of marriage.

Rise of gray divorce

One of the most notable trends is the rise of “gray divorce.” This term refers to divorces among adults aged 50 or older. While divorce rates for younger couples declined, the rate for those over 50 nearly tripled between 1990 and 2008.

The rate has stabilized in recent years but remained high. Divorce can happen at any stage of your life, even after decades together.
