Burlington County detectives and Mount Holly Township police officers are asking for the public’s assistance as they try to solve nine homicides. Some of the homicides occurred as far back as 2015 but remain unsolved for various reasons.
Now authorities in Burlington County NJ have offered rewards totaling $45K for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in any of the unsolved homicide cases. The hope is that the financial incentive will help detectives catch a break in the murder investigations as witnesses come forward. The reality is that investigators have been stymied due to a lack of information and no surveillance video images of the homicides.
Most of these murders were committed in Willingboro: data from the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office indicates that there are currently five unsolved homicides still being investigated by Willingboro police. Moreover, several of these fatal shootings resulted in the deaths of local Willingboro residents.
Burlington County prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi believes that the reward money being offered by the county could encourage witnesses to come forward. According to Bernardi, police investigators “know there are witnesses” with useful information about the unsolved killings.
Bernardi observed that a major reason people are often reluctant to come forward with information is that they do not want to be perceived as a “snitch.” But allowing a murderer to remain free, said Bernardi, endangers the public and puts Burlington County residents in danger of being victimized by a violent criminal. That’s why Burlington County officials are imploring the public to help law enforcement agencies protect local communities and “[remove] these perpetrators from society.”
Authorities have also expressed that any information or tips provided by members of the public will be kept in the strictest confidence.
